The year that was 2017 – Part 3. 2017 was a very busy year for the team here at Newsshooter. We covered a multitude of trade shows all over the world, bought you in-depth analysis of product announcements, and detailed reviews of a plethora of equipment.

The third part of our look back at 2017 is just what happened between July to the end of September. This is just a fraction of what we covered on the site during those months and includes our extensive coverage of IBC. July

  • Canon dropped the price of the C300 Mk II to under $10K USD
  • Ben Allan ACS talked about Wild Squad Adventures and the challenges of shooting in a 5:1 aspect ratio
  • Hawk-Woods announced the VL-MF1 adapters, a power solution for the new, very bright, SmallHD 503 and 703 monitors.
  • DroneShield opened orders for DroneSentry and DroneSentinel, systems designed to detect rogue UAVs using radar, radio frequency, acoustic, thermal and optical sensors.
  • RED unveiled HYDROGEN, the World’s first Holographic media player and mobile phone
  • Sigma announced pricing for 14mm T2 FF and 135mm T2 FF cine primes
  • I reviewed the Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG HSM OS Contemporary, an affordable full frame zoom
  • Venus Optics announced the Laowa Magic Shift Converter (MSC) for Sony Full Frame E-mount cameras
  • MZed Pro launched, for $299 USD you get all-you-can-eat online filmmaking courses
  • I reviewed the C7 Adapters Arri Alexa Mini and Amira Nikon G camera mount
  • Duclos Lenses came up with a Sony FZ mount kit for Fujinon’s new MK zooms. The mount allows users of Sony F3, F5 and F55 cameras to utilise Fujinon’s MK line of zooms.
  • I reviewed the The Hive Wasp 100-C
  • I also showed you how to do 2K/240fps RAW recording on the Panasonic VariCam LT and Odyssey7Q+
  • Sony released Ver. 4.00 firmware for the FS5, which added continuous 120fps recording, lower ISO settings, and Hybrid Log-Gamma
  • Erik reviewed the Aputure TRI-8
  • The new upgraded RØDE VideoMic Pro+ started shipping
  • MTF Services announced their MFT and FZ conversion for the Fujinon MK series lenses
  • Erik reviewed GNARBOX, a small computer that has a CPU, GPU, RAM and flash storage all in a compact shell barely bigger than most durable external hard drives.
  • Not long after it was released Sony pulled PXW-FS5 firmware version 4.0 due to Hybrid Log-Gamma issue
  • Erik reviewed DaVinci Resolve 14 to see if he could use it as a NLE
  • Spencer Chumbley reviewed the Zamboni belt, a handy solution for keeping everything to hand for news and doc shooters

  • August

  • The Apple store started selling a RED Raven kit with FCPX.
  • Final specifications and pricing was announced for the Panasonic AU-EVA1
  • Kyno– the all-in-one media management app got an upgrade
  • Lukilink, a device that replaces a monitor, recorder, streaming box, and even a wireless video link debuted on Kickstarter
  • The Sony FS5 & Z150 Firmware fix came out with v4.02 and v2.02
  • Imagine Products released myLTO, a program that formats and mounts LTO tapes then copies files to them.
  • I did an extensive review of the Canon C200 Production Camera
  • Filmpower released the Nebula Focus, a clip-on follow focus unit designed for use on gimbals by solo operators.
  • Newsshooter got a sneak peek at a working Panasonic AU-EVA1
  • Vocas announced the Top Handgrip Pro, a universal top handle.
  • I reviewed Rotolight’s AEOS, a lightweight, power efficient, colour temperature adjustable LED light with an impressive range of features.
  • Movcam announced a RED I/O Module, specifically designed for RED DSMC2 cameras.
  • Arri announced their own line of full spectrum neutral density filters
  • I reviewed the impressive Tokina Cinema Vista prime lenses
  • SLR Magic announced a new range of circular fixed ND filters for use on lenses with up to an 82mm front filter thread.
  • Newsshooter got confirmation that the Canon C200 codec update in 2018 would only be 4:2:0 8-bit
  • Arri unveiled Arri Pro Broadcast and Pro Cine kits for the Canon C200
  • Game of Thrones cinematographer Robert McLachlan was on the Go Creative Show podcast
  • Insta360 launched the Insta360 ONE, a 360 panoramic camera with six-axis stabilisation that shoots UHD and 120fps HD
  • Canon announced the 85mm f/1.4L IS USM and three TS-E Macro Tilt-Shift Lenses
  • Erik reviewed the SmallRig Atomos monitor cage
  • Canon announced firmware updates for the C300 Mark II and C100 Mark II
  • International news organisation Aljazeera decided to disable the ability to comment on any of their online stories
  • Panasonic GH5 Firmware 2.0 specifications and release date were announced.
  • Sony unveiled the RX0 which they claimed takes the image quality of the Sony RX series and compresses it into a robust and ultra-compact body.

  • Ricoh announced the 360° Theta V
  • DJI unveiled the Mavic Pro Platinum – 60% quieter and three minutes more flight time
  • Rotolight announced the NEO 2 LED
  • I reviewed the giant DoP Choice OCTA soft boxes
  • Angénieux announced the multi-format 12x Optimo– the mother of all zooms
  • Fujinon unveiled the UA24x7.8, the world’s smallest and lightest 4K 2/3″ broadcast ENG lens
  • Sachtler and Vinten rethink the tripod with the announcement of Flowtech
  • Sony unveiled VENICE, a 36x24mm full-frame digital motion picture camera system
  • Erik reviewed the Filmpower Nebula 5100 gimbal
  • Erik attended the Sony VENICE hands on event in LA

  • Arri announced the Master Grip Basic, a simpler version of the company’s control system without the electronics, designed to balance rigs for single operators.
  • Aputure showed MX, an updated version of the company’s M9 eyelight
  • We got a hands on with the Sachtler Flowtech 75 tripod
  • ABT cin showed the SpeedMount EF for DSMC2 RED Cameras
  • CMotion showed a new FIZ controller and motor system which are part of a new line called cPRO
  • First footage from the Panasonic EVA1 was released
  • Genustech unveiled the Scriptshade lightweight prompte
  • Lupo showed us a new Soft SuperPanel and Dayled bi-colour fresnel LED lights
  • Wooden Camera showed us their new D-Box Plus for Alexa Mini

  • GoPro also announced the HERO6, with UHD 4K video at up to 60 fps, and 240 fps video at up to 1080p
