Sony pulls PXW-FS5 firmware version 4.0 due to Hybrid Log-Gamma issue

FS5 Hero

“We are temporarily stopping download of PXW-FS5 / FS5K firmware.
We are planning a restart in early August”

Today Sony has pulled the FS5’s big firmware update V4.00 for some reason. It obviously has some issues which hopefully are not detrimental to users that have already updated their cameras. To my knowledge you can’t roll back a firmware update on the FS5.

I’ve reached out to Sony to see what’s up. They have responded and are looking into the matter.

Update

Here is the official statement from Sony regarding the firmware V4.00 update.

In response to instances of firmware issues for the PXW-FS5 (v. 4.0) and PXW-Z150 (v. 2.0), Sony has to date confirmed that these issues only occur in specific applications of HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) in HD shooting modes. We are continuing to investigate further and are working to release a firmware update in the coming weeks. We appreciate our customer’s understanding.

The PXW-Z150 V2.0 firmware also has this HLG bug in HD mode.

I also called Sony Service Center and was told when The FS5 is set to “Center Scan” mode with PP10 (HLG) selected. The image will have exposure issues with brightness and color shifts.

Updates for both cameras will be available early August.

Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG)

On the FS5 the new Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) has been added to the picture profiles (PP10). This Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) has four selectable settings. The [HLG] setting is equivalent to ITU-R BT.2100, the [HLG1], [HLG2], and [HLG3] settings enable images to be reproduced with a wider dynamic range. When you record using one of these new settings metadata gets embedded into the XAVC video file and then that metadata can be read by a TV or monitor that supports HLG. The TV or monitor can then automatically display the footage correctly as it was intended.

In the comments section two Newsshooter readers have stated they are experiencing XLR input audio sync issues after updating. I highly recommend checking your camera in the desired settings before heading out on a shoot to make sure you are good to go. Thanks for the input in the comments section!

Have you updated to V 4.00? If so is everything working as it should?
