The Prism Lens FX Shield Series is a new take on the 4×5.65 filter design. The Shiels Series is built around a precision-machined aluminum frame, which was designed to address three common pain points cinematographers face on a daily basis, filter handling, damage prevention, and rapid identification.
Unlike traditional bare glass filters that require careful handling and are vulnerable to fingerprints and edge damage, each Shield Series filter arrives fully encased in a lightweight aluminum frame.
By having the filter inside the frame, users no longer need to precariously put it in or take it out, which helps reduce the chance of breakage or damage. It also saves time.
Having a filter permanently inside a frame isn’t a new concept; however, having one in a frame that then goes inside a filter frame is. The Shield Series filters are the exact same size as a traditional 4×5.65″ filter, so they should fit into just about any mattebox.
The Shield Series features integrated grab tabs on opposite edges that allow operators to handle filters quickly without making contact with the glass surface. Precision-machined tongue and groove etchings along the frame’s sides provide tactile grip points, so users can securely handle them even when wearing gloves.
Each filter also features multiple identification markers laser-etched onto the front, back, and sides of the frame. This 360-degree marking system means filters can be identified from any angle, whether stacked in a case, laid on a cart, or held at arm’s length, eliminating the guesswork and lost time that sometimes comes with unmarked or minimally labeled filters.
The aluminum frame protects the filter’s edges from chipping and cracking while only adding minimal weight.
According to PrismFX, the frame’s low profile ensures compatibility with most standard matte boxes and filter trays.
Pricing & Availability
The Shield Series is initially available for Prism Lens FX’s creative effects filters, including the Dream, Starburst, Lucid, and Nostalgia filters, alongside a comprehensive range of ND strengths. All Shield Series filters are priced at $245 USD.
Thoughts
This looks to be a novel idea, and I like the concept; however, it would be interesting to see how well it worked with ultra-wide-angle lenses, as you are effectively making the filter slightly smaller than a 4×5.65″ by placing it in a frame with grip tabs. According to Prism Lens FX, they have tested the Shield Series Filters on wide-angle lenses and experienced no issues.
