The YC ONION Kiwi 2-Person Wireless Microphone is being touted as an affordable, small-sized wireless audio solution for content creators. It looks like a decent solution for both smartphones and smaller-sized mirrorless hybrids.
The Kiwi system consists of two TX units and one RX unit.
YC ONION claims that the Kiwi is the smallest wireless microphone currently on the market. The TX units and RX when combined are roughly the size of a lipstick.
The TX separates from the RX, and if we go back to the lipstick reference, it is like separating the cap from the actual lipstick.
Also because the TX features a strong magnet it can be hidden underneath clothing and it becomes arguably less visible than other larger systems that are currently available.
The TX units weigh just 7.5g / 0.26 oz and the RX unit weighs 20g / 0.70 oz.
The Kiwi features 3 Modes:
- Noise Canceling
There is a 5-level volume control for setting the output level.
To charge the TX you simply attach it to the RX unit and both will be charged when you place them inside the included charging case. The charging case can be charged via USB-C. YC ONION claims that the TX units can operate for up to 11.5 hours and the RX can operate for up to 8 hours on one charge.
You can also charge the RX unit from your phone and it is claimed that in just 15 minutes you can get up to 4 hours of run time. There is also a triple-head OTG cable so you can charge your phone and the RX unit from an external power bank.
As far as inputs and outputs are concerned, the RX unit has a USB-C digital output, 3.5mm analog output, and a 3.5mm headphone jack for monitoring.
The claimed latency is 5ms and the operating range is up to 50m / 164′, but that will depend on placement and the environment you are in. From my experience, a lot of these systems have limited range and are quite susceptible to interference.
