Atomos Edit Public Beta Now Available

Atomos Edit

Atomos has released Atomos Edit Public Beta, a cloud-based video editing platform. According to the Australian company, Atomos Edit is ‘Here to revolutionize your video editing experience‘. Atomos Edit was originally announced back in April 2023 and it is part of Cloud Studio, a collection of cloud-based video production services.

Atomos Edit is a little different from traditional NLE programs as you only need a web browser to access and use it. Atomos states that this gives users access to a powerful suite of editing tools, anytime, anywhere. All you need to do to use it is sign in on any computer and start editing. This allows you to edit material without physical storage, software installation, or drivers.

We caught up with Atomos at NAB 2023 and they walked us through their whole Cloud Studio ecosystem.

Key features

  • Professional-style timeline with multiple audio and video tracks
  • Multi-user editing with the ability to lock the timeline
  • Collaborative review, comment, tag and approve workflows
  • High-speed, interrupt-resilient uploads of large video files
  • Effects and transitions
  • Powerful sequence versioning
  • The ability to directly import stock video content

The pitch for Atomos Edit is that it removes the hassle of cables, offloading media, and transportation. Atomos claims that Edit is the ‘Ultimate tool for immediate social media sharing to YouTube and other social media platforms‘.

The Atomos Edit timeline allows you to have multiple audio and video tracks. It also features multi-user editing that can lock the timeline to ensure that edits are properly managed.

You can add effects and transitions, as well as directly import stock video content. According to Atomos, there are over two million royalty-free stock elements that you can drag and drop into your timeline to save time and production costs.

With Atomos Edit you can upload files in the background to your Atomos Edit bin while you are shooting. Now, with the Atomos Edit free public beta release it is not possible to upload footage directly from Atomos Connect products, nor is it possible to add additional storage. According to Atomos, this functionality will be available in the shipping version. This is quite strange given the fact that Atomos Edit is designed to work with Atomos CONNECT. ATOMOS CONNECT adds network connectivity and cloud services (via subscription) to existing products like the Ninja V and Ninja V+, and is built into Zato CONNECT and Shogun CONNECT. Atomos CONNECT utilizes WI-FI 6 and 1 GbE Ethernet so that users can livestream and share media with Camera to Cloud services.

The whole pitch at launch was that you would be able to upload media in the field directly from an Atomos device and then edit it on any browser using Atomos Edit, so I am not sure what you will actually be able to do with the Beta version.

The Ninja V and V+ with ATOMOS CONNECT and Shogun CONNECT can capture from most types of video cameras and record internally using a production-quality codec like ProRes, or ProRes RAW. At the same time, they they can record high-quality full HD H.26, a much smaller bandwidth-friendly codec, but still high quality. This proxy format is automatically uploaded to the cloud, where it is immediately available for editing with Atomos Edit. Zato CONNECT is streamlined for cloud operation and records directly into H.264, which is also used as the proxy format.

Atomos also says that if you want a more professionally finished version later, you can transfer your full-resolution files to popular editing software and relink using XML data from Atomos Edit.

You can also use tools for collaborative workflows so that users can review, comment, tag, etc. This can be done from a phone, tablet, or desktop computer. Atomos provides activity reports and push notifications so that you can see who else has viewed, downloaded, and commented on the shared video files.

Once you have finished editing, you can publish directly to YouTube and Vimeo without downloading and editing large media files or upload finished media to the cloud.

So what can you do with the Public Beta version?

Above you can see what is available with the Public Beta version. For the best performance, Atomos recommends that you use either Chrome or Firefox. Internet Explorer is not supported by the editor. Safari is mostly supported, but live rendering of color correction during editing is not possible at this time.
