Sony has announced its new FE 8-14mm f/3.5 G Fisheye Zoom. This is the first-ever E-mount fisheye zoom. A fisheye zoom is a pretty niche lens, but it can be useful for some applications.
The lens features independent zoom, iris, and focus rings, so it is well suited for video applications.
Key features
- Full-Frame | f/3.5 to f/22 Aperture
- Circular-to-Diagonal Fisheye Zoom Range
- Autofocus Design | 5.9″ Close Focus
- Ideal for Video, Photo & VR Imaging
- Independent Focus, Zoom & Aperture Rings
- AF/MF/FH & Zoom Lock Switches
- Dust- & Moisture-Resistant Design
- Rear Filter Holder & Cutting Template
The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 5.9″ / 14.98cm. Sony has also incorporated a rear filter holder, which is handy.
The lens offers a full 180° angle of view across its 8 to 14mm zoom range. When used with full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, the lens transitions from a circular fisheye at 8mm to a diagonal fisheye at 14mm.
Two linear motors are claimed to provide fast, precise autofocus with minimal focus breathing.
The lens is compact and lightweight, weighing just 11.1 oz / 314 g. There are dedicated AF/MF/FH, zoom lock, and aperture click switches, and it features dust- and moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine-coated front element.
Pricing & Availability
The Sony FE 8-14mm f/3.5 G Fisheye Zoom is now available to pre-order for $1,598 USD. It is scheduled to start shipping on October 15th.
