Atomos & Panasonic S1H RAW Recording Firmware

Panasonic has finally released its RAW Video Data Output over HDMI firmware update program (firmware version 2.1) for the S1H. Atomos has also announced its AtomOS Beta update for the Ninja V to enable Apple ProRes RAW recording.

This was first announced back in May and I did a first impression article which you can read here. The firmware update was supposed to be available on the 25th May to download, however, there was a delay and Panasonic and Atomos issued the below statement:

The firmware updates enabling the much-anticipated Atomos Ninja V and Panasonic LUMIX S1H RAW over HDMI combination have unfortunately been slightly delayed from the original 25th May release schedule, to ensure the highest possible level of RAW recording.

An unforeseen technical issue has come to light in the final rounds of beta testing that needs rectification prior to shipping. The companies are working together to complete the development as soon as possible. We apologize to our mutual customers waiting for the functions this release enables.

Please note that Panasonic will be releasing Ver 2.0 firmware on May 25th with various improvements to camera functions, however, it will not include the planned RAW HDMI output feature. Atomos will release its Ninja V AtomOS for LUMIX S1H HDMI RAW in-line with Panasonic’s RAW output firmware.

Well, it seems like those issues have already been sorted out and the firmware is finally available to download. It is probably no coincidence that Panasonic is making this firmware available on the same day as the Sony a7S III announcement.

Panasonic Firmware

Working together with Atomos, the new firmware enables the output of up to 5.9K/29.97/25p/23.98p and up to 59.94p in 4K DCI RAW video data over HDMI to the Atomos Ninja V HDR monitor-recorder. This signal is then recorded as ProRes RAW. You can also record 3.5K Anamorphic in a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Here are further details:

RAW video data output over HDMI
[5.9K] / [4K] / [Anamorphic (4:3) 3.5K] 12-bit RAW video data can be output over HDMI.

Apple ProRes RAW can be recorded on Atomos Ninja V.1 V-Log or Rec.709 is selectable on Live View monitor during RAW output.

Shooting assist functions including WFM (Wave Form Monitor), Vector Scope, Luminance Spot Meter, Zebra Pattern can be used during RAW output.

New LUT

A LUT (Lookup table) exclusively designed for RAW video recorded on NINJA V is available from: https://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/download/lut/s1h_raw_lut/index.html.

This LUT will allow you to match the color grading with V-Log/V-Gamut2. Using this new LUT, you can match colors between the footage recorded with Panasonic Varicam, EVA1, and GH5 series cameras to combine them.

This firmware update is completely free. The firmware is now available at the LUMIX Global Customer Support website: https://av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dsc/

Atomos Firmware

If you want to record ProRes RAW on compatible Atomos product you need to register to download the public Beta via the Atomos website. 3.5K Anamorphic ProRes RAW recording won’t be added until the final release expected in August.
