It utilizes Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism that is claimed to provide fast, quiet, and precise autofocus performance throughout the zoom range.
The lens is compatible with most of the Nikon Z camera-specific features and functions, including Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF.
The minimum focusing distance is 6.7″ / 17 cm, and it features a 1:3.8 maximum magnification. The front filter diameter is 67mm.

The optical design of the 20-40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD consists of 12 elements in 11 groups, and it has 9 aperture blades.
