Sony has announced two new super-telephoto prime lenses for its full-frame E-mount system: the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS. Both ship in October 2026, and Sony is positioning them as the lightest lenses in their respective focal-length/aperture classes, based on its own survey of current interchangeable super-telephoto lenses as of the September 2026 announcement.

Design and Handling

Both lenses are built for handheld work rather than tripod-based shooting. Sony shifted the center of gravity back toward the camera body and the tripod mount rather than the front of the lens, which the company says improves control when tracking moving subjects and reduces fatigue during extended handheld sessions with birds, wildlife, and sports.
Four customizable focus hold buttons are positioned around the barrel, alongside a function ring, a focus range limiter, a Full-time DMF switch, a focus mode switch, and an image stabilization mode switch. Both lenses carry a dust- and moisture-resistant build (not fully sealed) and a fluorine coating on the front element.
Optics and Autofocus
The optical formula uses three Super ED elements and one ED element to control chromatic aberration at long focal lengths, paired with Sony’s Nano AR Coating II to reduce ghosting and flare in backlit conditions. An 11-blade circular aperture handles bokeh rendering.
Autofocus runs on two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors with a control algorithm tuned to each lens. Sony rates both lenses for full compatibility with the a9 III’s 120 fps continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking, based on Sony’s own test conditions. Built-in optical image stabilization is included, along with support for compatible camera bodies’ Active Mode stabilization, coordinated IS control, and focus-breathing compensation.

Both lenses accept Sony’s SEL14TC (1.4x) and SEL20TC (2x) teleconverters, extending the 400mm to 800mm and the 600mm to 1200mm.
