In a surprise announcement, Atomos has acquired Flanders Scientific. According to Atomos, this strategic move reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to precision monitoring across the entire production pipeline, from on-camera capture through to final color grading and delivery.
The acquisition puts Atomos into a position where it can deliver a more complete and integrated monitoring solution for filmmakers, broadcasters, and content creators.
In a lot of ways, the acquisition of Flanders Scientific by Atomos makes a lot of sense. It will be interesting to see what direction this takes.
Atomos tried making larger monitors called the NEO series quite a few years ago, but ultimately, that series was discontinued. Last year, they announced the Atomos Studio PRO-2710 grading monitor, and according to the company, that line is still scheduled to start shipping later this year.
Beyond expanding the product portfolio, the acquisition of FSI enables Atomos to immediately support the highest tier of the professional monitoring market. Flanders Scientific monitors are widely used and relied upon by postproduction houses, broadcasters, and major content studios, where strict requirements exist to ensure that content is accurately mastered for delivery. Achieving this level of qualification and adoption takes many years of product development, testing, and industry validation. Through this acquisition, Atomos adds a portfolio of products and technology that are already trusted and validated at the highest levels of the industry.
Flanders Scientific monitors won’t be rebranded as Atomos products. Flanders Scientific will continue to operate as a distinct brand within the Atomos family. Atomos claims that there will be no change to its product philosophy, engineering approach, or the high standards that professionals rely on. Customers can expect continued delivery of the same trusted accuracy, consistency, and performance that defines FSI.
Buying an established brand should certainly help Atomos’ revenue stream, and leaving it to run as a standalone company makes a lot more sense than rebranding it as Atomos. It will also be interesting to see if there will be any crossover of operating systems and whether or not AtomOS will be implemented into future Flanders Scientific products.
“We are incredibly proud to welcome the Flanders Scientific team into Atomos. They have built a reputation for absolute precision and trust in reference monitoring, and that aligns perfectly with where we are taking the Atomos business. This acquisition strengthens our commitment to monitoring at every level, from on-camera through to final delivery, while also accelerating our ability to support the highest tier of professional production and post-production workflows. By combining FSI’s expertise with our global scale and innovation, we are creating something truly unique for the industry. Just as importantly, we are committed to preserving what makes Flanders Scientific special. The brand, the philosophy, and the engineering approach will remain unchanged, while gaining the support and reach of the broader Atomos organization.
Personally, this acquisition means a great deal to me. It is my 11th! Some of you may know, I have been part of seven key acquisitions at my other company, Blackmagic Design, which helped grow that business into what it is today. Starting in 2009 with DaVinci Systems in the USA (DaVinci Resolve), followed by EchoLab in the USA (ATEM switchers), Teranex Systems in the USA (video and standards conversion), Cintel International in the UK (film scanning), Eyeon Software in Canada (digital effects), Fairlight in Australia (audio mixing), and Ultimatte Corporation in the USA (blue screen keying).
Since being asked to join Atomos in 2024, I have made three key acquisitions: Aaton Digital, eCinema, and some important strategic IP, with each forming the foundation of different future Atomos product lines, and now the fourth with Flanders Scientific.
That is part of how I believe strong technology companies are built. First, through internal engineering and innovation. Second, by bringing in complementary technologies and capabilities. And third, through the acquisition of key brands, product lines, technologies, and key expertise that help build a stronger, faster-moving company.
Ultimately, this is about offering better products and better solutions, and building a stronger, more diverse company, not only for our customers, but also for our team members and our shareholders.
That is exactly what we are doing at Atomos. I am very proud of what we are building, very pleased to welcome the FSI team into the group, and very excited about what we can achieve together.
Thank you to everyone for your continued support. We are not done yet!”
Peter Barber, Chief Executive Officer of Atomos
“Joining Atomos is a significant, and exciting, moment for Flanders Scientific. FSI was built on the simple premise that professionals responsible for image fidelity deserve tools they can trust. That standard has never changed, and it won’t. What this partnership gives us is the infrastructure and reach to stand behind that promise for more customers, in more markets, more effectively than we could on our own. I’m excited about what we can deliver together — not just for the broadcast, digital imaging technician, and colorist communities we have always served, but for the broader production world that Atomos reaches every day. The best work FSI has ever done is still ahead of us.”
Bram Desmet, Chief Executive Officer of Flanders Scientific
