The Zimmerman Cinema VariColour Filter Tray, is a new in-camera effects tool called the VariColour Filter Tray. It is a low-cost, hand-assembled solution for creating color and contrast shifting visuals in camera.
It was invented by Bryce Zimmerman, a filmmaker and designer based in Toronto. It is made using off-the-shelf components.

The VariColour Filter Tray is an adjustable colour and contrast device that changes the image in front of the camera sensor or film plane. This product builds on the history of the Varicon, built to pre-flash film and lift the shadows. With the innovations in LED technology, it is now possible to create lightweight full RGBW control, allowing for creative possibilities that are nearly impossible to replicate in post.
While this concept is not new, it has not been possible to offer to most filmmakers at an affordable cost until the recent developments in quick prototyping and 3d printing technologies. The VariColour Filter Tray is offered at the most competitive possible price, approximately one-tenth that of the next least expensive option.
The LED lights around the edge of the filter tray illuminate any dispersal elements in the filter and create color effects as the light scatters. Depending on the filter used, the intensity and type of color shift changes.
The VariColour Filter Tray is built to accept standard 4×5.65 filters and this model fits into a 3 tray ARRI LMB Mattebox.
The VariColour was born out of necessity on a low-budget feature Bryce was shooting years ago, where he needed to simulate a drugged POV effect. He prototyped it with Velcro and Sintra back then, but after years of refining it with 3D printing and real-world testing, Bryce turned it into a product for other filmmakers, so that they too can have access to this creative tool.
Over the years, Zimmerman taught himself CAD, 3D printing, and electronics, diving deep into prototyping with a singular goal: to create an affordable, repeatable version of the original that could be used and reimagined by other filmmakers. The result is the VariColour Filter Tray: a slim, edge-lit filter tray that creates color and contrast shifts in-camera, offering a tactile and responsive tool for visual storytelling.
Built using off-the-shelf components and a durable 3D-printed frame, the VariColour is designed to fit in place of three matte box trays. The device works with any effects or diffusion 4×5.65” filter up to 4.5 mm thick, and allows for a wide variety of outcomes depending on the type of filter used. This tool enables real-time adjustments to the colour and contrast of scenes, including special effect modes that are difficult, expensive, or impossible to replicate in post-production.
