ARRI ECS Software Updates

ARRI has released a swathe of new software updates for the ECS systems. These updates bring a bunch of improvements to both the Nudge feature and the Diopter Compensation feature, including support for Ensō lenses.

Diopter Compensation (BETA) Update

The accuracy of the diopter compensation feature is greatly improved and support for the Ensō Vintage Elements is added. The changes in detail are:

  • Compatibility with Diopter Compensation (BETA) on ALEXA 35 SUP 2.2.0 and newer. If the diopter compensation feature is enabled in the camera, the camera provides the corrected lens values to the hand units and stores all relevant data in the clip metadata. The corresponding menu in the Hi-5 is greyed out and the diopter toggle user button can be used to toggle the compensation on/off.
  • Support of Ensō Vintage Elements (3 positive, 3 negative diopters) in combination with Ensō lenses. The diopter type “Rear” now contains Impression V (IV) and Vintage Elements (VE)
  • More accurate focus compensation model, especially for negative diopters (IV & VEs)
  • The following shim ranges are allowed to activate the diopter compensation:
  • o Positive IVs: 0.00mm – 0.15mm
  • o Negative IVs: 1.85mm – 2.00mm
  • o Positive VEs: 0.00mm – 0.15mm
  • o Negative VEs: 2.85mm – 3.00mm
  • Compensated FIZ fields on the Hi-5 display are now indicated with highlighted corners (white frame) instead of white background
  • Various bug fixes and stability improvements
  • Please remember that:
  • o Only the numeric FIZ values are compensated, but not the FIZ scales
  • o If the diopter compensation is activated, then focus-tracking cannot be used
  • o If diopter compensation is set up locally in the Hi-5, the compensated FIZ values only exist temporarily on the Hi-5 and are not stored in the clip metadata.
  • o If diopter compensation is set up in the ALEXA 35 camera, the corrected lens metadata, as well as the original lens metadata and the filter type are stored in the clip metadata.

Nudge Feature

The nudge feature is a new and unique feature introduced with SUP 3.0 and enables silent communication between members of the camera department. A nudge can be triggered from several ARRI devices, while the receiving device can be set to vibrate or to show a display notification.
Now, a nudge user button is available on the ALEXA 35 with SUP 2.2.0 and newer. In addition, a nudge event is now transmitted in the whole ECS ecosystem between multiple ECS devices. This is especially important when using an ECS motor controller like a RIA-1 or cforce mini RF on an ALEXA 35 camera, as a nudge trigger from the camera is now forwarded to the hand unit through the whole ECS chain.

Changes in particular are:
• A nudge event is also transmitted/received via LBUS cable on the Hi-5
• A nudge event is forwarded between different motor controllers (e.g. from ALEXA 35 to RIA-1). This means that a nudge event is now communicated between all LBUS devices in the network.
• The nudge event can be triggered by a camera user button on the ALEXA 35 (from SUP 2.2.0)

RIA-1 SUP 2.3.2

• Diopter Compensation (BETA) Update
• Nudge Feature Improvement

Diopter Compensation

• Compatibility with Diopter Compensation (BETA) on ALEXA 35 SUP 2.2.0 and newer
• If the diopter compensation feature is enabled in the camera, the camera provides the corrected lens values to the hand units and stores all relevant data in the clip metadata. The corresponding menu in the Hi-5 is greyed out and the diopter toggle user button can be used to toggle the compensation on/off.

Nudge Feature

• A nudge event is forwarded between different motor controllers (e.g. from ALEXA 35 to RIA-1). This means that a nudge event is now communicated between all LBUS devices in the network.
• The nudge event can be triggered by a camera user button on the ALEXA 35 (from SUP 2.2.0).

ZMU-4 SUP 1.3.2

Diopter Compensation

• Compatibility with Diopter Compensation (BETA) on ALEXA 35 SUP 2.2.0 and newer
• If the diopter compensation feature is enabled in the camera, the camera provides the corrected lens values to the hand units and stores all relevant data in the clip metadata. The corresponding menu in the Hi-5 is greyed out and the diopter toggle user button can be used to toggle the compensation on/off.
• If the ZMU-4 is used in radio host mode on an ALEXA 35, it forwards all relevant diopter data between the camera and wireless hand units.

LCUBE CUB 2 SUP 1.3.1

• Fujinon ENG Lens compatibility
• Sony Venice compatibility
• Lower latency lens control

Fujinon ENG Lens compatibility

This SUP ensures compatibility of the CUB-2 with Fujinon Box Lenses. Depending on the setup, it could have happened that zoom control was not possible via external zoom demands.

Important notice: Zoom control must be disabled in all ECS or LBUS devices if an external zoom demand is used.

Sony Venice compatibility

There were situations where it was not possible to control the lens axis when connected to the Sony Venice Lens port. In addition, there were situations, where the zoom axis was drifting in Sony Venice setups.

Lower latency lens control

The lens data update interval has been reduced, which allows faster and more price lens control.
