Richard Gale Optics is getting closer to formally announcing its new Albion65 medium format cine lenses. These lenses will work on the ALEXA 65, ALEXA 265, Fujifilm Eterna, and the Blackmagic Design URSA Cine 17K 65 Camera.

Above you can see images of the first bare aluminium test assembly.

The housing and mechanical design were designed to be versatile, allowing space to accommodate simple non-retro-focus medium format primary optical blocks with long back focus distances (and their inherent desirable defocus character).

The new Albion65 medium format series utilizes the same design principle employed in the original Clavius lenses but is adjusted to suit medium format field angles. Each focal length shares the same optical characteristics dictated by whichever ‘normal focal length’ vintage primary optical block is chosen as the basis of the lens set.

A native ‘Sub’ M645 mount (stainless steel) is employed on these lenses. This can then be adapted to LPL (in both clear (medium format 6×6 or 645) or 0.7x focal reduced (for full frame 24×36) depending on sensor size) using c7adapters‘s range of positive locking adapters that couple with the tailored sub m645 mount.

When Fujifilm eventually released the Eterna GFX motion picture camera the Clavius can be adapted and/or focal reduced down by 0.8x to cover the full diagonal of the GFX 100mp sensor with a 2/3rds of a stop aperture boost.
