Sony α7S III DCI 4K 24.00p Upgrade License available in March

You will soon be able to get a license that adds the ability to shoot videos on the α7S III in DCI 4K. This allows you record video at a resolution of 4096×2160, which is wider than 4K (QFHD: 3840×2160), and select a frame rate of 24.00p.

Are there any caveats?

Yes. When 24.00p is selected, proxy video recording is not possible. In addition, the camera will reboot when you select 24.00p or switch from 24.00p to a different frame rate.

When will it be available?

The license will only work with α7S III running firmware ver.3.00 which will be announced sometime in March. Now, the license will be free to obtain. In addition, once obtained and installed on a camera, the license can be used for an unlimited period of time.

There hasn’t been a firmware upgrade for the α7S III since September 2022.
