Tokina 11-18mm f/2.8 ATX-M Lens for Sony E

Tokina recently announced its new 11-18mm f/2.8 ATX-M lens for Sony E-mount APS-C cameras. This is an affordable ultra-wide zoom that will be right at home on APS-C Sony alpha mirrorless hybrids.

Tokina has a long and established history of making quality, affordable wide-angle lenses for APS-C-sized sensors. Their 11-16mm F2.8 lens was a staple in many shooter’s bags dating back to the days of the Sony F3, FS700, Canon C300, RED ONE, etc. In recent years, the 11-20mm F2.8 has taken that mantle. Both those lenses that I just mentioned are still available and they are a very good marriage of price and performance.

The new 11-18mm f/2.8 ATX-M lens has been designed from the ground up, specifically for APS-C Sony mirrorless cameras. It is smaller and 40% lighter than its DSLR cousin, the 11-16mm f/2.8 ATX-I CF lens. This smaller size makes it a good compliment when used with mirrorless bodies, especially if you plan on using one with a gimbal or drone.

The optical construction of the lens consists of 13 elements in 11 groups. There are two aspherical elements and two super-low dispersion elements for chromatic aberration and coma control, as well as a 9-blade rounded aperture 7.4″ close-focus capability. The lens has a 67mm front filter diameter and a close focus ability of 7.4″ / 18.79cm.

The ST-M motor is designed to provide near-silent autofocus operation and it is compatible with Sony’s 5-axis image stabilization system. Manual Focus, MF Assist Mode, Eye AF, and in-camera Optical Correction technology are also supported.
