LensKit is the new app from the makers of CameraKit (formerly Cameras + Formats). Essentially, LensKit is a massive lens database where you can search thousands of lenses from Angenieux, Arri, Cooke, Hawk, Leica, Zeiss, etc.
LensKit is currently geared towards more modern cine lenses, but the company does have plans to add stills lenses and vintage lenses in the future.
So what does LensKit show?
LensKit gives you information about the lens you want to see if 6 specific categories:
- LENS MATCH
- DEPTH OF FIELD
SPECS includes information about max. aperture, lens mounts, weight, length, close focus, front diameter, and more.
COVERAGE allows you to overlay a lens’ image circle on your camera sensor to make sure it’s covered. LensKit includes over 150 cameras from ARRI, Canon, RED, Sony, Blackmagic, Panasonic, etc.
LENS MATCH lets you mix and match spherical, anamorphic, speed boosters and extenders, and even factor in post-production aspect ratio extractions.
EQUIVALENT enables users to choose a focal length and a camera and get the Super35 equivalent. Or you can pick the S35 equivalent length you want and see the lens you’ll need.
DEPTH OF FIELD
DEPTH OF FIELD is an easy-to-use yet comprehensive DOF tool that allows for customizing the circle of confusion with presets and manual input.
PREVIEW lets you see a simulation of your shot based on lens, camera, and distance. You can also pinch, zoom and reposition to get the exact frame you want, and see what lens or distance you’ll need.
LensKit also has the ability to filter lenses to see only what fits your specific camera and needs. You can save your calculations and return to them later. There is also the option to group together lenses you rent or own for quick access.
