Newsshooter celebrates its 10th birthday

ns 10years3

Big things have small beginnings. Ten years ago today, Newsshooter published its first-ever article. Back in those days, we were known as DSLRnewsshooter.

Above is the first ever post written on the site by Co-founder Dan Chung. It was 46 words long and featured a single photo!

DSLRnewsshooter was set up so working news, documentary and factual shooters had somewhere to go to find out the latest news, information, and shooting techniques. At the time the site was more of a hobby than anything else, but it soon grew to become an integral part of the filmmaking community.

Newsshooter was at the forefront of the DSLR revolution and was one of the few sites that were showing how this new breed of cameras could be used by professionals. Since that time, we have grown and evolved, but our basic philosophy and principles have remained the same.

I caught up with Dan Chung to talk about how Newsshooter started, how it evolved, and how technology has changed over the last decade. You can listen to our conversation above.

You have to know where you have come from to know where you are going

Newsshooter has been authored by video shooters from around the globe, and it is a place for professionals, educators, students, and industry figures to discuss the practice and the art of cinema in documenting the real world.

Site Editor Matthew Allard ACS and US Editor Erik Naso have over 50 years of combined experience working in the TV/Film industry. Their vast experience and insight allow them to give a unique and knowledgeable insight into equipment and how to use it.

Newsshooter has zero full-time staff. Everyone who contributes to this site does it in their spare time as they are working professionals in the industry. This gives us real-world insight when it comes to reviewing and talking about the gear and the craft of filmmaking.

Keeping you up to date with the latest news, covering major trade shows and reviewing equipment is a very time-consuming process. An article or a review you may read in 15 minutes may have taken us weeks. The team behind Newsshooter provide this website to you, our readers, because we love what we do, and we want to make sure you are informed about all the new gear and how it can be used.

Independent

Every review and article is done independently, and while we usually work closely with the brands to ensure we can bring you the complete story, there is no influence from any manufacturer or sponsor on what we produce. Every product is reviewed or discussed based on its merits regardless of where or who it came from.

Newsshooter’s strength has always been its independence and its ability to provide, honest and open feedback about the products we cover. We have a reputation for being tough critics because we believe that you need to know all the facts.

Over 5000 articles published

In the last 10 years, 5160 articles have gone up on the site. If you break this down, 5160 articles over 10 years equate to 1.4 articles being published 356 days a year for the last 10 years. This is a staggering number considering Newsshooter doesn’t have any full-time staff. Everyone who is involved with Newsshooter does this in their spare time.

Thank You

Newsshooter wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for you, the readers. You are the reason we are motivated and passionate about producing quality content for Newsshooter, so thank you very much for all of your support. Without your support, we couldn’t continue to operate.

I would also like to thank the many contributors over the years who have helped us create content. There are just too many people to name individually, but you know who you are. A big shout out to Scott Karlins, Elliot Smith, Simon Glass, and Taro Irei who are the backbone of our event coverage. Scott Karlins has covered every single NAB and IBC show that Newsshooter has done.

A special mention should also go to Teradek, Movcam, Kessler, and Atomos. These were the first companies that were willing to sponsor a small independent niche blog site back when we only had a small following. I’d like to also thank all the companies that have sponsored us in the past, especially those companies who helped us cover the big trade shows like NAB and IBC.

Erik Naso joined the team after Dan’s departure from Newsshooter a few years ago and we struck gold. You can’t replace a Dan Chung, but Erik has brought his years of experience and knowledge to Newsshooter and filled those big shoes. Thank you, Erik, for not only being a pro’s pro but also for your friendship and hospitality.

Ironically Dan was sitting in the row behind me on a flight last week by total coincidence!

Finally, I have to pay homage and give a big thanks to Dan Chung. Without his vision, this site would have never existed. Dan put his heart and soul into Newsshooter, always with the goal of creating quality, original content. The philosophy which still holds true to this day was always to educate as well as inform. At the end of the day the gear is just a tool and the most important thing is not what you use, but how you use it.

Dan taught me so much over the years and I will forever be grateful. If that 46-word article had of never posted on the 25th September 2009, Newsshooter wouldn’t be here today.
