You can now pre-order Wooden Camera’s VX Skateboard Camera Mic, which is a recreation of the classic Sony DCR-VX1000 microphone which was popularly used in many skateboarding videos.
To get the iconic sound from the DC-VX1000, Wooden Camera reverse engineered the microphone to try and match it as close as possible. They even look very similar, with a stereo pick up
You can hear what the mic sounds like compared to the original VX1000 camcorder in the sample below. There are also audio samples using other popular microphones like offerings from RØDE, Sennheiser and Panasonic’s camcorders on the VX microsite. Interestingly, they left out a number of stereo microphone options including RØDE’s Stereo VideoMic Pro.
There are no switches or audio pad settings on the microphone.
Ty Evans from Ghost Digital Cinema shares some background on the iconic Sony VX1000 sound and some history on his time filming skateboarding.
