Sony expands G Master Series with 24mm f/1.4 Lens

Sony has announced the new 24mm F/1.4 G Master Prime lens.

The lens features a new optical design comprising 10 groups with 13 elements featuring two XA (extreme aspherical) elements and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements. The incorporation of two XA elements effectively suppresses sagittal flare so that point light sources are accurately reproduced.

To reduce flare and ghosting, Sony has applied their Nano AR Coating.

Interestingly, the lens only weighs 445g, and measures 75.4mm x 92.4mm with a φ67mm filter thread which makes it look quite light when compared to other 24mm f/1.4 lenses. For comparison:

Canon 24mm f/1.4L II USM – 650g – $1,549 USD
Nikon 24mm f/1.4G ED – 620g – $1,996.95 USD
Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG SM Art for Sony E – 665g – $849 USD

The difference in weight will be a big advantage for landscape and travel photographers as any weight you can save is always welcome.

On the lens itself, it has a large focus ring, AF/MF toggle button, customisable focus hold button and an aperture ring that can be declicked for smooth aperture changes.

The FE 24mm f/1.4 GM will ship from October 2018 and is priced at $1,398 USD.
