Louie Eroglu ACS explains how he shot the 3 part documentary series “The Killing Season” on a camera he has never used

By technical editor Matt Allard:

Louie Eroglu, ACS, Director of Photography on ‘The Killing Season’, explains how he shot a three part documentary series for the ABC on the Rudd/Gillard years with a camera he’d never used before. The “Killing Season” is a three-part documentary series that takes the viewer behind the closed doors of Australia’s corridors of power as it chronicles the tumultuous years of the Labor government that saw Australia’s Prime Minister forced out by his deputy only to regain the job a few years later.

The article published on ABC Back Story details how he went about using the Canon C300 to achieve a more ‘filmic’ look. Louie had never shot a documentary before, or used large image sensor cameras for any length of time. Coming from a news/current affairs background Louie is used to using 2/3″ ENG broadcast cameras with zoom lenses. The challenge of switching to a large image sensor camera and using prime lenses was one that he met head on. According to Louie: “They are very different cameras and disciplines and I had to learn to embrace fixed lenses, which are used often in feature films. We had 6 different lenses to choose from and I had to think carefully about which lens to use for an interview.”

The full interview and article article can be read over on the ABC Back Story page. The Killing Season has just started screening on ABC TV in Australia.
