At NAB 2014 we interviewed Tiffen’s Carey Duffy about some test he had done to show the effects of the company’s filters when combined with modern lenses and digital sensors. We showed a short preview at the show. The full test video is now available to watch below:

I am particularly impressed with the ability of lower strength Glimmer glass and Pearlescent filters to mimic the feel of older lenses. The Glimmer glass, especially the 1/4, seems to be a nice way to take the digital edge off a modern digital images.
The test video is done using Sony’s F55, but I’m curious to see what effect the extra halation and contrast reduction these filters have when used with less expensive cameras like the Panasonic GH4 (which many accuse of producing an overly digital image especially in 4K). I’d also like to compare the difference between the look from these filters versus attempting to do the same digitally in post production.
I’m hoping to buy one next time I’m at a Tiffen dealer.
