PhotoPlus Expo 2013: News Shooter looks at the full-frame Sony Alpha 7 camera from Chuck Fadely on Vimeo.

We take a look at the new Sony Alpha 7 24-megapixel full-frame E-mount camera and find out why it’s better than it’s sibling, the Alpha 7r, (a 36-megapixel version) for video. At PDN PhotoPlus Expo, Sony’s Drew Temple gives us the rundown on the camera, which bears a family resemblance to the NEX 7. The Alpha 7 should ship by December with a price of $1700.

Edit – Early evidence from Andrew Reid over on EOSHD.com suggests that the A7r may actually have a better video image than the A7. Check them out here. Bear in mind that these are not retail samples and final image quality may change before sales start.

Update – Here are some shots of menu screens on the Sony A7. The menus are a huge improvement over the NEX series of cameras and they give you a lot of control over both the image and the camera. Picture styles, which can be customized, apply in video mode.

Without the optional XLR pack, audio levels are set through a menu. You can program buttons so you can get to it reasonably quickly.

You can keep the audio meters up on screen.

You can set lots of things in video mode, including peaking color.

A clean view with only a histogram, if that's all you want.
