JuicedLink unveil BMC366 low-noise preamp for Blackmagic

By features editor Mat Gallagher:

Juicedlink blackmagic preamp

The new Juicedlink BMC366 Low-Noise Preamp has been designed exclusively for use with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera. Launched just prior to NAB, the Preamp is very similar to the RM333 Riggy Micro, except for a few subtle changes. The unit now sits upside down compared to the RM333, with the large array of switches now on top of the unit. This means the controls are easier accessed when mounted on the camera (although I suspect it potentially leaves it more susceptible to the elements). It retains three XLR inputs with 48V/12V phantom power available for compatible Mics. Where the RM333 has a single 3.5mm output, there are three outputs on the BMC366, two balanced outputs to match the dual inputs on the Blackmagic, as well as an unbalanced output for external recorders. This saves having to use a custom splitter cable, as was needed previously to use Riggy preamps on a BMCC. One feature that has not made its way onto this Preamp, is any form of audio level meter. This means that an EVF or monitor with audio levels via SDI is still needed if you want to be absolutely sure the camera is recording good audio. This seems an oversight, unless Juicelink know something we don’t about coming updates to the Blackmagic, one can only hope that audio level displays during recording are about to be added.

The BMC366 is due for release April 2013, with price still to be confirmed. For more information, visit Juicelink
