Aputure has released an interesting video that takes you inside the camera and lighting workflows of HBO’s hit show The Pitt.
The BTS features insights from Cinematographer Johanna Coelho and Chief Lighting Technician Keelan Carothers, and they show you the lighting and camera strategies required to capture the show’s intense and continuous style.
As the set design didn’t allow for traditional lighting stands on the floor or through windows, the team needed to integrate the lighting into the set architecture. Initially, they tested various white wall finishes but settled on pearl because it provided dimension and depth for skin tones without the flatness or distracting light bouncing associated with other matte whites. Aputure XT52 LED units were used for the ambulance bay exterior.
What is interesting is that the lighting technicians wore medical scrubs and hid in the background, using boom poles to provide necessary eye light to the actors while appearing as background extras.
ARRI also released a video in which cinematographer Johanna Coelho AFC gave a presentation at a recent ARRI event about her approach to shooting seasons 1 and 2 of the Emmy-winning series The Pitt.
