Sony has a new product video showing the HDC-3500RV/HDC-3500R 2/3‑type 4K 3‑CMOS EFP cameras, which are claimed to offer smooth handling and precision image technologies for simultaneous HDR and SDR production. These cameras were first announced back at NAB in April. The cameras should be available to purchase soon.
The high-performance 2/3-type 4K 3-CMOS image sensor features a global shutter to eliminate rolling shutter distortion and the risk of banding under artificial light.
The HDC-3500RV features Extended Range Capture and Selectable Video Sensitivity for flexibility in challenging lighting conditions. The cameras can deliver a direct 4K output in addition to HD 4x HFR. There is a built-in variable ND filter, and the cameras support wireless operation, with a choice of optional external panels.
The cameras allow for simplified workflows such as video trunk, which allows external signal routing, and the prompter line for virtual and AR productions. Additionally, the network trunk enables the transmission of camera tracking and control data through a single connection.
The cameras feature a B4 lens mount and a unified intercom panel that is consistent across the series. They are compatible with large viewfinders to assist in various production environments.
The HDC-3500RV supports wide colour spaces including ITU-R BT.2020, S-Gamut3, and S-Gamut3.Cine, as well as SG3 (LIVE GRADE) and SG3.Cine (LIVE GRADE), for HDR and cinematic workflows.
Replacing the side panel with the optional HKC-WL50 wireless transmission adaptor enables wireless 4K signal transmission directly from the camera.
The HDC-3500RV and HDC-3500R have a lot of similarities, but also some differences in their technical capabilities and hardware options:
The HDC-3500RV comes with a pre-installed optical variable ND filter; however, with the HDC-3500R, this feature is available only via an optional hardware installation. The filter unit also supports additional creative and optical filters. Available filters include the EXTRA OLPF filter to reduce moiré when capturing LED screens, and the BLACK MIST filter, which creates a blurred effect by diffusing soft light onto the subject
The HDC-3500RV has Extended Range Capture and Selectable Video Sensitivity, while the HDC-3500R does not. The HDC-3500RV also includes advanced software-driven features (planned for a future update) to further optimize image quality in difficult scenes.
