NANLUX Nebula B4 White Light Engine & Nebula C8 Color Light Engines Explained

NANLUX has released a document that explains the benefits of its two core engine solutions, the Nebula B4 White Light Engine and Nebula C8 Color Light Engine. These have now been integrated across the NANLUX fixture range, from the Evoke 5C up to the Evoke 5000B.

The release covers the technology behind the system’s spectral accuracy, efficiency, green/magenta adjustment, wide colour-temperature ranges, and UV safety. 

The light engine is the heart of any LED fixture, and it is a specific arrangement and mix of LED chips inside the light that determines the spectral output: what colors are present, how strong they are, and how they combine to create white light and colored light. That spectrum is what ultimately defines how subjects will appear on camera. It determines not just color temperature, but also how skin tones render, how fabrics and materials reflect, and how colors look under different lighting conditions. A well-designed light engine delivers consistent, predictable, and accurate results across a wide range of situations, while a poorly designed one can cause shifts in skin tone or unnatural color saturation.

The Nebula Light Engine system is the company’s latest professional lighting technology and was developed to provide purpose-designed light engines for different types of fixtures. The system is built on the core principles of accuracy, efficiency, and reliability. By matching the right light engine to each fixture, the Nebula system is claimed to ensure outstanding output, light quality, color performance, and operational safety.

The Nebula Light Engine system is made up of two solutions: the Nebula B4 White Light Engine and the Nebula C8 Color Light Engine. Fixtures that need maximum white-light output use the Nebula B4. Fixtures that need greater color flexibility use the Nebula C8.

This means high-output fixtures use the Nebula B4 to maximize white light and deliver powerful illumination for large-scale applications. Fixtures that need a complete spectrum of color use the Nebula C8, which offers an ultra-wide color temperature range and deep color capabilities for fill lighting, color effects, and atmosphere creation.

NANLUX integrates the Nebula B4 into the Evoke 2400B, Evoke 5000B, and Matrix 2500B. While, the Nebula C8 is integrated into fixtures ranging from small- to medium-power fixtures such as the Evoke 5C, Evoke 150C, and Evoke 600C, up to high-output fixtures like the Matrix 2500C.

The Nebula Light Engine system has evolved into a complete solution for professional lighting applications. NANLUX’s strategy is to offer the ideal light engine for each fixture based on its role on-set, letting each fixture perform at its best in the scenarios where it is used. Nebula B4 White Light Engine

The Nebula B4 is an efficient tunable bi-color light engine with precise green/magenta adjustment. It is built from four white LEDs: Cool White+, Cool White−, Warm White+, and Warm White−. These four LED types correspond to four points on the chromaticity diagram.

The color gamut formed by these points covers the Planckian locus from 2700K to 6500K. It also extends into the green and magenta regions above and below that locus. Because of this, the Nebula B4 can generate white light at different color temperatures across 2700K to 6500K and adjust green/magenta tint throughout the entire range to match cameras or other lighting. This overcomes a key limitation of traditional bi-color systems, which often cannot correct green/magenta shifts properly.

According to NANLUX, since the Nebula B4 uses only white LEDs, it achieves higher luminous efficiency than systems that create white light by mixing colored LEDs. Compared with systems that mix white from colored LEDs, the Nebula B4 is claimed to deliver higher white-light output at the same power level. Higher luminous efficiency means more electricity is converted into light and less energy is wasted as heat inside the fixture, especially useful when trying to maximize output when fixtures like the Evoke 2400B are used on domestic power circuits.

Because less power becomes heat, the fixture’s cooling load is reduced. The cooling system can be smaller and lighter, making the whole fixture more compact. More importantly, this helps the fixture maintain stable output during long periods of high-power operation. That is why high- power fixtures like the Evoke 2400B, Evoke 5000B, and Matrix 2500B are good choices for delivering bright, consistent output in large-scale matrix lighting setups.

Nebula C8 Color Light Engine

The Nebula C8 is the industry’s first eight-color light engine. It combines eight LED colors: Deep Red, Red, Amber, Lime, Green, Cyan, Blue, and Indigo. This innovative mix is designed to fill gaps in the spectrum that traditional color engines miss.

By integrating Deep Red, the Nebula C8 can go as low as 1000K, achieving an unprecedented range from 1000K to 20,000K. This provides productions extremely warm candlelight-like tones at 1000K and very cool daylight and beyond at up to 20,000K.

The Nebula C8 also provides more continuous and complete coverage in the red wavelength range. This is claimed to bring out healthy skin tones with natural vibrancy and accurate texture. NANLUX states that compared with traditional color light engines, the Nebula C8’s advanced eight-color system delivers a wider color gamut, higher color saturation, and improved output quality in challenging colors like deep red and indigo. Within the CIE 1931 color space, the Nebula C8 reaches about 82% coverage, around 6% higher than Rec. 2020 in the visible gamut. In the Rec. 2020 color space specifically, it achieves roughly 94% coverage.

The Nebula C8 also removes the ultraviolet (UV) wavelength from the indigo LED. This has two important effects. It helps prevent potential UV exposure to people at the source, and it avoids unwanted UV-triggered fluorescence from subjects and objects on set. This ensures the light output is safe for talent and crew, and more controllable in environments with fluorescent materials. As a note, all NANLUX and NANLITE LED fixtures are designed not to emit ultraviolet light.

With its advanced 8-color system, the Nebula C8 enables high-flexibility fixtures such as the Evoke 5C, Evoke 150C, Evoke 600C and Matrix 2500C to deliver richer, more accurate, and more controllable lighting effects, easily adapting to a wide range of professional production applications. These lights can handle subtle fill and natural white light, plus bold color effects and stylized atmospheres. They also offer precise tuning with wide green/magenta adjustment across the full 1000K to 20,000K range.
