Tamron has completed its G2 Lens Trinity with the addition of the new 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Wide-Angle Zoom.

The 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is being touted as a lightweight, fast, wide-angle zoom with high-end optics.

The lens maintains the incredibly lightweight and compact design points (440g/15.5oz, 101.8mm/4in length φ67mm filter diameter) of its predecessor. The internal zoom (non-extending zoom) mechanism stabilizes the center of gravity, making handheld shooting, vlogging with a grip, capturing selfies, or gimbal use easy.

The optical construction of the lens consists of 16 elements in 12 groups. The 16-30mm F2.8 G2 includes one XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion), two LD (Low Dispersion), and three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lenses to minimize chromatic and various other aberrations.

The lens is being targeted at content creators and users of Tamron’s existing 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 and 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2. 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2.

The lens features an updated ergonomic design for improved operability, and the connector port works in conjunction with Tamron Lens Utility software for customizing lens functions and updating firmware through the lens rather than through the camera.

Just like the other Tamron Di III VXD G2 zooms, the 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is only available for Sony E and Nikon Z lens mounts.

An internal zoom provides stability by minimizing changes to the center of gravity while shooting. Since the total length of the barrel never changes while zooming

The lens has a close focus ability of 7.5″ and a front filter diameter of 67mm.

Price & Availability

The Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Wide-Angle Zoom is now available to pre-order for $929 USD. This makes it far more affordable than, say, the Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II Lens that retails for $2,298 USD.

The lens will start shipping at the end of July in Sony E mount, and in August for the Nikon Z version.
