The Sony FX5 has slipped again. Sony’s own direct-to-consumer stores in Europe, including the UK, France and Germany, now list November 16, 2026 as the first ship date for the FX5. That is one month later than the October 16 date those same stores were showing previously, and roughly three months after the camera was supposed to reach customers.
Sony has not issued a new press release to accompany the change. The revised date has simply appeared on the product listings at sony.co.uk, sony.fr and sony.de.
What about the US?
As of this writing, US retailer listings have not moved. Adorama is still showing October 16. During the last round of delays, however, the European date changed first and US listings followed a few days later, so North American buyers should not count on October 16 holding.
Sony’s official position
The only formal statement Sony has made about the delay comes from Sony Marketing Japan. Its notice, first posted on August 18 and revised on September 18, says the FX5 release has been postponed due to production-related circumstances. The notice originally gave no new date. The September revision changed that to “late October or later” (10月下旬以降). That Japanese notice has not been updated since, and technically a mid-November European ship date still falls inside its “or later” window.
The postponement covers the camera body and three accessories:
- FX5 (ILME-FX5 / ILME-FX5B) camera
- DVF-EL1 OLED viewfinder
- XLR-H2 XLR handle unit
- VMC-BNCU1 timecode adapter cable
The September revision also said Sony Japan’s launch campaign for the FX5 would be rescheduled, with new dates to be announced once confirmed.
At IBC 2026 in September, Sony stated it was still working to deliver a fully polished product and that this was taking time. The company has not elaborated beyond that.
Why is the FX5 late?
Sony has not identified the cause. Several explanations have circulated since August:
- Demand. On July 28, Sony Japan posted a notice saying FX5 orders had far exceeded its expectations and deliveries could take time. Demand alone, though, does not explain why most regions received no units at all.
- Quality control. In mid-August, Canon Rumors cited two sources describing an unspecified quality control issue. German retailer Foto Erhardt told customers at the time that Sony was making a final quality adjustment before shipping and that the adjustment would not affect camera performance.
- The Kumamoto earthquake. A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture, home to Sony’s largest image sensor plant, on July 28. There is no confirmation it affected FX5 sensor production.
- The rear LCD. This is currently the most concrete lead. A small number of FX5 units did reach buyers in some regions before Sony halted shipments. On October 2, PetaPixel reported on a Reddit user in Mexico City who received three FX5 bodies in late August and says all three have the same fault: the rear LCD assembly can shift out of position, leaving a gap that exposes internal components. The user says the same behavior appears on rental house units they checked. A second owner reports Sony has agreed to replace their unit with a new one on October 19.
A mechanical problem with the LCD hinge assembly would fit the pattern. It would require a hardware fix rather than a firmware update, explain a multi-month hold on shipments, and account for the time needed to rework stock and clear a large preorder backlog. Sony has not confirmed it, and Newsshooter has asked Sony for comment.
Timeline
- July 22, 2026: FX5 announced. Japan release set for August 21, US availability for mid-August.
- July 28: Sony Japan warns of delivery delays due to higher than expected demand.
- Mid-August: Retailers report Sony has not shipped stock. Quality control rumors surface.
- August 18: Sony Japan confirms postponement due to production-related circumstances. No new date.
- Late August: Sony Europe stores list October 16.
- September 18: Sony Japan revises its notice to “late October or later.”
- October 2: Reports of a rear LCD fault on early-shipped units gain traction. Sony Europe stores move to November 16.
What it means if you preordered
If your preorder is with a European retailer, expect your delivery estimate to move to mid-November or later. Most major dealers, including B&H, do not charge until an item ships, so there is little cost to keeping your place in the queue. Given the size of the backlog, first shipments after November 16 will likely go to the earliest orders, and some buyers may not see a camera until December.
Pricing and availability
The FX5 is available for preorder in two configurations:
- FX5 body only (ILME-FX5B): $4,898 US / £4,700 UK. Preorder at B&H
- FX5 with XLR-H2 handle unit (ILME-FX5): $5,498 US / £5,200 UK. Preorder at B&H
- DVF-EL1 OLED viewfinder: $698 US
Sony’s current European ship date is November 16, 2026. The official Sony Japan window remains late October or later.
