PlantCam, as the name would suggest, is a camera designed specifically for capturing time-lapses of plants. It was designed with simplicity in mind. You simply stick it to a window, and it automatically takes photos every 10 minutes. It then uses AI to create time-lapse videos.
It could be an interesting tool if you are doing a specific project and require an affordable time-lapse solution. Even though it’s targeted for use with plants, there is no reason why it couldn’t be used for other applications.
Users can mount the PlantCam to a window using the included suction cup, and as long as it’s powered via USB and connected to WiFi, PlantCam automatically takes a photo every 10 minutes.
PlantCam utilizes a 5MP camera sensor and captures images with a resolution of 2560×1920 pixels. According to the company, all the images are processed using an AI model to improve resolution, enhance sharpness, and reduce image noise.
Timelapse videos are generated in the cloud, and an algorithm is used to normalize the brightness of the images to reduce flickering. Intermediate images are created using an AI model to make the timelapse videos appear as smooth as possible, so that there are no abrupt jumps.
All images and videos are stored in the cloud free of charge. This means you can access your images and videos anytime, anywhere, without using up storage space on your phone or needing an SD card that you have to plug into your computer every time you want to view your videos.
PlantCam is designed for indoor use only, and it is not weatherproof and should not be exposed to outdoor elements like rain or extreme temperatures.
PlantCam comes with a free PlantCam App. Using Bluetooth, you connect the PlantCam to the app during initial setup. It then gives you access to your photos and videos at all times from anywhere. Users can choose which images they’d like to turn into a video and then select a preferred framerate. Then, within seconds, a time-lapse video is available on your smartphone.
