FUJIFILM has unveiled its new X-E5, which features a compact, film-inflected, rangefinder-style body.

This interchangeable lens camera is accompanied by a brand-new pancake lens, the XF 23mm f/2.8 R WR. This combination is very similar to FUJIFILM’s X100VI, as it utilizes the same 40MP X-Trans CMOS sensor, X-Processor 5, and, for the first time in an X-E camera, in-body image stabilization.
The X-E5 is also the first X Series model to include a customizable Film Simulation dial.
Key features
- 40.2MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS 5 HR Sensor
- X-Processor 5 Image Processor
- 6.2K/30, 4K/60 and 1080p/240 fps Video
- 7-Stop In-Body Image Stabilization
- Configurable Film Simulation Dial
- 425-Point AF, AI-Based Subject Detection
- 2.36m-Dot 0.62x OLED EVF
- 3.0″ 1.62m-Dot 3-Axis Touchscreen LCD
- SD/SDHC/SDXC UHS-II Card Slot
- Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2 Connectivity

The top-plate is carved from a single piece of metal, not only enhancing the look and feel of the FUJIFILM X-E5, but also improving the dial operation. Additionally, an anodized finish gives the body a refined, high-quality aesthetic.

The viewfinder and diopter adjustment control fit flush with the body, while the Bluetooth button on the base plate evokes the look of the rewind button on classic film camera.
Video Features
The APS-C-format 40.2MP sensor and X-Processor 5 allow for 10-bit 6.2K up to 30p, 4K up to 60p, or FHD up to 240p video recording.

A benefit of the extra resolution the 40MP sensor provides is that you can utilize new 1.4x and 2x digital teleconverter modes, which give you the effective equivalent focal lengths of 49mm and 70mm, respectively. Depending on the shooting mode, digital teleconversion may be canceled or cannot be selected. You can also choose from two F-Log recording options.
Above, you can see all of the resolutions, frame rates, codecs, etc. that are available. There are recording limits, but they will be dictated by the battery life.

There is also a newly updated AF algorithm, which uses AI for claimed faster autofocus and improved subject detection and tracking performance in a wide array of lighting conditions.
FUJIFILM X-E5 uses X-Processor 5’s subject detection AF to accurately track a range of subjects. Built using deep-learning AI technology, it detects animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, airplanes, trains, insects, and drones.*
*Set the SUBJECT DETECTION SETTING to BIRD for insect detection, and AIRPLANE for detecting drones

The FUJIFILM X-E5 also includes the Film Simulation mode REALA ACE. This joins 19 other included film simulation modes that you can choose from.

Film Simulation modes allow you to reproduce the look and feel of several of FUJIFILM’s film types. The X-E5 boasts FUJIFILM’s latest recipe-REALA ACE-and also includes 19 other modes, including Provia, Velvia, Astia, Classic Chrome, PRO Neg.Std, PRO Neg. Hi, Classic Neg., Nostalgic Neg., Eterna Cinema, Eterna Bleach Bypass, Acros, Acros + Ye Filter, Acros + R Filter, Acros + G Filter, Black & White, Black & White + Ye Filter, Black & White + R Filter, Black & White + G Filter, and Sepia.
23mm f/2.8 lens
The X-E5 can be purchased with a 23mm f/2.8 lens. This looks to be very similar to the one that is built into the X100VI.
The Fujinon 23mm f/2.8 lens features a revised optical design that includes two aspherical elements for improved sharpness and clarity through the reduction of spherical aberrations and distortion. With a 35mm full-frame equivalency, the lens’ bright f/2.8 design handles low-light conditions and affords shallow depth of field.
The XF23mm F2.8 R WR may be a new addition to the family of X Mount lenses, but it follows a long history of other 23mm lenses that also find their origin stories connected to the original X100 fixed lens camera. Offering exactly the same angle of view that is very similar to our own eyesight, XF23mmF2.8 R WR joins XF23mmF1.4 R LM WR and XF23mmF2 R WR in establishing new standards for creativity with a lens that combines remarkable compactness with modern optical design.

Its weather-resistant design is built to handle harsh conditions, including moisture and temperatures as low as -10°C. A lens hood is also included for further protection against impact and dus
Other Features
The X-E5 features in-body image stabilization, which can compensate for up to 7 stops of camera shake.
The camera comes with a 2.36m-Dot 0.62x OLED EVF and a 3.0″ 1.62m-Dot 3-Axis Touchscreen LCD.

The new Classic Display mode* provides a clean viewfinder image with key information at the bottom of the frame. Combined with a body style that allows you to operate the dials and the lever with one hand, you can immerse yourself in image making with the camera to your eye.
*Only available on the EVF

FUJIFILM X-E5’s Front Control Lever accesses the Surround View function, which displays a semi-transparent or outlined area outside the image. This provides an OVF-like experience, enabling you to see outside the EVF frame so you can easily monitor what’s about to come into frame.
For wireless connectivity, the X-E5 has Frame.io Camera to Cloud technology in addition to conventional Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. You can use the camera’s built-in Wi-Fi or Ethernet LAN connection to connect to Frame.io and deliver hi-res raw or JPEG images, send h.264 video proxies, or upload video securely for review.
There is an SD/SDHC/SDXC UHS-II Card Slot.
