Freefly Ember S2.5K– 2900fps at 2K

Freefly has introduced its new Ember S2.5K, which is capable of shooting up to 2900fps at 2K. This completes the vision they had 3 years ago to deliver the world’s smallest, easiest, most fun, high speed imaging system.

Along with being able to shoot up to 2900fps at 2K resolution you can go up to 3563fps if you choose a reduced image height. You can also record

The table above lists the Width (top row) and Height (left column) combinations supported by the Ember S2.5K in full color and the Ember S5K in monochrome (available for all Ember S5K in FW 2.0, coming soon). Both use 2×2 pixel binning, but only the S2.5K has a matching Quad Bayer color filter array. Only Height affects the maximum frame rate (right column). 2K width is center-cropped. Common aspect ratios are noted.

The 2.5K sensor has 9uM pixels so it retains the same crop factor as Ember S5K. It is also nice and compact and the camera weighs in at just 800g / 1.76 lb. The sensor size is 2560 x 2048.

Firefly states that the camera is being targeted at Vibration analysis, Engineering testing Product & material testing, Nature / Wildlife Sports biomechanics, Schlieren imaging, Fluid dynamics, Microfluids, Academia Digital image correlation, Automotive Aerospace and defense, and R&D applications.

S2.5K will ship with a new high-endurance pSLC SSD that enables variable pre / post trigger arrangements and can record continuously for up to 10,000 hours.

Ember S2.5K maintains compatibility with ProRes and breaks our old record of the fastest ProRes implementation ever.

You can connect to your Ember with your iPhone or iPad and enjoy fast stabilization for any of your shots. Ember Stabilize uses data from the internal IMU to correct or maintain a stable orientation of the image, compensating for movements and vibrations.

Amplify is a technique used in image processing to enhance small movements in videos, making them easier to see. This can help in identifying and fixing vibrations in mechanical systems. Additionally, it allows for adjustment of the frequency range to target specific movements more effectively. You have the option to turn this on or off.

In addition to S2.5K, Freefly are also releasing new features for all Ember cameras:

They are also launching an update for the Ember app that brings complete control, preview, trimming, and stabilization to iPhone, iPad, and Mac OS.

If that wasn’t enough they are also announcing an active EF mount that can control aperture and focus of select EF lenses. Ember features an adaptable chassis that allows for user customization of lens mount. Ember S2.5K ships with an Active EF compatible lens mount.

Unfortunately Sony asked Freely to no longer produce E-mount versions of their cameras, which is a pity. Who knows, maybe Sony plans unmaking its own high speed camera at some stage.
