The Orion HDMI Monitor is a free iOS app that allows you to use an iPad as a portable screen if you have a USB-C capture card or dongle.

Now, along with a USB-C capture card or dongle, the app also requires you to be running iOS 17 and an iPad that has USB-C.

The Orion app could be used for turning your iPad into a portable display for use with your camera, so you can check your framing, focus, etc. In saying that, I would imagine that there would be a delay as there always is when using any type of HMDI capture device. If you just need to check framing, fixed focus, etc. then it will probably get the job done. You can also use it in conjunction with a Mac, PC, or other HDMI-capable devices to get an extra screen to output video to.

Orion can also do more than just display video. You can use it to share a quick screenshot of your video feed. Other features include full audio passthrough for playing HDMI device-connected audio directly to AirPods or other connected devices. You can also share full videos from your device with iPadOS Screen Recording.

There is also a paid version called Orion Pro (which is a one time upgrade) where you can also adjust the video brightness (from regular brightness to darker than the system brightness), upscale HD video or games with an AI powered 4K more upscale, or use a 3-way retro CRT Emulation system.

Orion states that they collect and share no data. The free version has no ads, and no tracking.
