Panasonic GH6 gets external BRAW Recording to Blackmagic Design Recorder

Tilta Panasonic GH6 Camera Rigs

Panasonic announced an upcoming Ver 2.3 firmware update for the LUMIX GH6 that adds BRAW recording to Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR external recorder. While the GH6 has been out for some time, it’s good to see Panasonic add more value to the MFT camera for existing owners. The GH6 retails for $1,697.99. This includes a $500.00 instant discount.

GH6 Firmware Version 2.3

The firmware program will be available on the LUMIX Global Customer Support website, on July 10, 2023, at 9:00 p.m. EDT.

To record BRAW, you need to use the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR, which is available in 5″ and 7″ models.

12-bit RAW video in [5.7K],[C4K],[Anamorphic (4:3) 5.8K],[Anamorphic (4:3) 4.4K] can be output to the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR’ over HDMI to be saved as Blackmagic RAW.

Support for 4K 120p/100p HDMI output

Either C4K 120p/100p or 4K 120p/100p video can be output to the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR over HDMI.

As I stated, I think it’s great to have options, especially if you own the GH6 and even better if you use the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR as well, but I’m not sure I would be interested in purchasing the kit to get BRAW recording as we have so many options now for internal and external Raw recording with a larger sensor. MFT was an excellent value play, especially with the video features of the GH6, but in mid-2023, it feels a little long in the tooth as a new purchase.
