The lens uses a multi-focus system with dual STM motors that are said to provide fast and precise focus regardless of whether you are shooting stills or video. The linear focus function is internal, which results in minimal amounts of focus breathing.
The optical design consists of two aspherical elements combined with one ED element to help minimize fluctuations from aberrations. This is said to lead to very good corner-to-corner sharpness and it helps reduce the amount of onion-ring bokeh. The lens has 11 aperture blades. A Nano Crystal coating is claimed to prevent ghosting and flare effects.
The lens features weather sealing and there is a programmable control ring
which by default allows you to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
