Tamron is developing a 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD ultra-telephoto zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras.

The lens is expected to be available in Fall 2022. However, due to the current global health crisis, the release date or product supply schedule could change.

The 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD will be the same size as conventional 100-400mm zoom lenses with the added versatility of being able to go to 50mm on the wide end.

The 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 will have a length of 7.2” / 18.28cm and it will weigh 40.7oz / 1.15kg. The front filter diameter will be 67mm.

The lens will feature Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism and its proprietary image stabilization mechanism VC (Vibration Compensation).

The minimum focus distance when using the lens at 50mm will be 9.8” / 24.89cm.

Along with a new lens design, the 50-400mm will have an improved texture and operability, and a Connector Port for the Tamron Lens Utility. An optional Arca-Swiss compatible accessory tripod mount will be available.

Tamron has a long history of making ultra-telephoto zoom lenses and their quality has continued to improve over the years. These types of lenses are a good lens to have in your kit bag if you need to travel very light, but you need to be able to cover a wide array of focal lengths. What you sacrifice is speed, you make up for in versatility. With most mirrorless hybrids now performing well at higher ISO settings, the slow aperture arguably isn’t as bog of a caveat as it used to be.
