Canon has announced the DP-V1830 Reference Monitor. This is an 18″ UHD, 1,000 nit, Dolby Vision and EBU Tech3320 certified monitor with advanced HDR monitoring tools.

This monitor features an 18.4″ screen and it tips the scales at 7.5kg / 16.53 lbs. It is essentially the replacement for the DP-V1711 which features a 17″ screen and weighs 8kg.

The DP-V1830 uses a new processing engine and LED backlight control system. Previous Canon reference monitors required the BOOST mode to be used to achieve peak brightness which would disable local dimming. With the DP-V1830 it can produce 1,000 nits of brightness while keeping the local dimming activated. This is claimed to help it more realistically display HDR material.

The DP-V1830 covers 85% of the entire Rec.2020 color gamut and it far exceeds the DCI-P3 color gamut.

It features 4x 12G-SDI inputs/Outputs and an HDMI input. There is also an RJ-45 ethernet port and a 3.5mm audio out.

The monitor has a large array of video monitoring tools that include:

  • Waveform
  • Vectorscope
  • Configurable False Color
  • HDR/SDR Compare View
  • Out of Gamut Check
  • Out of Range Check
  • Pixel Value Check
  • Peaking
  • User LUT Import
  • VITC Time Code

It also features an HDR/SDR split-screen function, and support for Canon Log/2/3, HDR EOTFs, Hybrid Log-Gamma (BT.2100), SMPTE ST 2084, and ACES.

When processing raw footage from a Canon C300 Mark II/ Mark III or C700/500/ 500 Mark II, the monitor performs the debayering function internally, eliminating the need of a debayering unit to display the raw footage. There is also support for up to eight 1D-LUTs enables you to see an approximation of how your graded footage will look. Additional features include Shape Tracing for artifact minimization, two-sample interleaving, 2/4 split-screen mode, 4x and 8x zoom, peaking, and fan shutdown during sound recording.

Price & Availability

The Canon DP-V1830 will be available in January 2022 for an estimated retail price of $14,299.00 USD. As a reference the Canon DP-V1711 17″ UHD 4K Reference Display which it is replacing retails for $9,999 USD.
