SmallHD introduces the 703 Bolt. A 7″ monitor with built in Teradek receiver

What do you get when you stick a Teradek Bolt wireless video system into a 703 high bright monitor?  A portable monitoring machine. Since SmallHD and Teradek are under the Vitec Group of companies it makes perfect sense to create products that work perfectly well together. The 703 Bolt is an example of this.

SmallHD Bolt Front 2

The 703 Bolt is a 7″ daylight-viewable monitor with a built-in 300 Teradek Sidekick receiver. It is available as a stand-alone monitor or as a Director’s Monitor kit with a Gold mount or V-mount battery plates. The monitor features a 7″, 1920 x 1080 display panel with 3000 NIT brightness and incorporates two SDI inputs and one SDI output.

703 Bolt Highlights

  • 7″ 1920 x 1080 Display
  • Integrated Teradek Sidekick Wireless Rx
  • SDI Inputs
  • Bright 3000Nit LCD Panel
  • Power via 2-Pin LEMO
  • PageBuilder OS

The built-in Teradek receiver has a range of 300′ and is compatible with Bolt 500, 1000, and 3000 transmitters. The 703 Bolt monitor draws 16W with the wireless on, and has a 10-bit IPS panel, while otherwise sharing similar functionality with the SmallHD 703U.

SmallHD Bolt Director 2

SmallHD kept the new 703 Bolt slim even with the built-in receiver to make it easier to hold and handle. It’s 1/8 of an inch thicker than the 703U. The weight savings in this combo makes this a strong candidate for DITs, directors or ACs. The Director kit includes a neck strap, accessory handles, and a battery plate.

SmallHD Bolt Front Nice

One input that is missing is HDMI Since this new product is directed at the higher end camera market I understand it not having one, however, a lot of cameras have both and options are always nice. A few nice touches are the slim design and the way the antennas are protected on top.

With two SDI inputs, this allows the user to have another video source and use the split screen feature to see both video signals. The monitor has a bonded glass screen that should protect it from scratches.

The handles have a nice streamlined approach. They easily attach to the side with a simple Allen wrench. Of course, the 703 Bolt also has the new and very power OS3 software.

SmallHD has an “early adopter” price for the two models until the end of January.

The 703 Bolt is $3499, regularly $3999 USD

The 703 Bolt with Directors Bundle is $3699 in Gold mount or V-mount, regularly $4199.

Director monitor handles – $149.99

V-mount & Gold mount plates – $149.99

Accessories are also available separately.

You do have to be aware that these prices do not include a compatible Bolt transmitter. The Bolt 500 transmitter is $1,890 USD, the Bolt 1000 transmitter is $3590 USD, and the Bolt 3000 transmitter is $5690 USD.

This is definitely a high-end monitor and wireless video receiver system. By the time you factor in the cost of the 703 Bolt with Directors Bundle and add even the basic Bolt 500 transmitter you are looking at $5389 USD.

The concept of putting a built-in wireless receiver isn’t new as companies like Transvideo have done it before, but it’s good to finally see it being done with popular products from SmallHD and Teradek. After all, the whole reason behind Vitec acquiring all these companies is so that integration like this could happen.
