RED announces the 5K SCARLET-W Camera

fully

RED have today announced a new addition to their camera line up, the SCARLET-W. The SCARLET-W features a RED DRAGON sensor, interchangeable lens mounts, simultaneous recording in REDCODE® RAW and Apple ProRes formats, an intelligent OLPF system, and in-camera 3D-LUT outputs. The camera can capture 5K at up to 60 frames per second in 2.4:1, 4K at 150 fps, or 2K at 300 fps with REDCODE RAW. According to RED, it’s wide dynamic range produces cinema-quality images rich with natural color.

SCARLET-W also offers an upgrade path to WEAPON and uses the DSMC2TM line of accessories, making it compatible with both RED RAVEN and WEAPON cameras. This gives RED shooters the option to move between camera systems without having to purchase all new gear.

SCARLET-W comes along just after the recent 4.5K RED RAVEN announcement, and places the camera between the RAVEN and RED WEAPON where there was a big hole in the line up. The SCARLET-W offers slightly more resolution than the RAVEN, an interchangeable mount and OLPFs, and can do slightly higher frame rates. It is unfortunate that the camera will be limited to capturing 2K resolution if you want to record in ProRes. There is also no option to record in anything higher than ProRes 422 HQ. If you want to monitor via an SDI or HDMI monitor, you’ll have to get the package deal or add a module with outputs separately. The SCARLET-W does not come with any external outputs.

The old SCARLET MX is a 3 year-old camera using 5 year-old technology, and was long over due for a replacement. The new SCARLET-W beats it out in just about every category. Unfortunately for current SCARLET DRAGON owners who haven’t had their cameras very long, RED won’t be doing a trade-in, but they will have a $2,500 package discount available for current SCARLET DRAGON owners.

As well as the SCARLET-W, RED is also introducing a SCARLET-W Monochrome. This camera will feature all of the same specs, except the sensor is a 5K black and white version from the DRAGON. This gives shooters the ability to capture black and white images that contain enhanced resolution and heightened light sensitivity

The SCARLET-W will cost $9,950US for the camera BRAIN® and $14,500US for the complete Base I/O V-Lock Package. According to RED, customers that have placed RED RAVEN pre-orders can easily change to a SCARLET-W pre-order. The camera is estimated to begin shipping in February 2016, and deposits will be accepted beginning today.

The SCARLET-W looks to be a good addition to the RED line-up and I can see the camera being very popular with indie filmakers and as a B camera to be used alongside the more expensive WEAPON. SCARLET looks to be taking over where EPIC left off, and at a much more affordable price.
