VidiU Pro

If you regularly stream video on the move then you’ll be familiar with the problem: getting enough bandwidth to make your transmission smooth and interruption free can be a nightmare. Most prosumer streaming solutions use just one or two connections and can be unreliable, especially in congested urban areas. There are several high-end bonded cellular / wi-fi solutions available, but these are primarily aimed at broadcasters and have high price tags.

The new VidiU Pro camera-top box from Teradek aims to offer a robust HD streaming connection at prosumer prices. Its new ShareLink technology allows you to bond multiple internet connections and use them to stream directly to all of the common streaming services including Youtube, UStream and Livestream. Wifi, Ethernet, a USB modem and up to four iPhone cellular connections can be pulled together to reliably stream your video in HD. At a big news event you could use your own cellular connections as well as those of nearby colleagues, and possibly even members of the public around you (if you can persuade them to share their connections for free!)

The VidiU Pro accepts video via a HDMI connection and can handle all regular frame rates up to 1080/30P. There is no SDI on board, but you can of course use a SDI to HDMI converter if you really need it.

The box weighs just 190g and has an internal battery that should provide up to two hours of transmission. An OLED display on the box shows you the settings at a glance. One very nice feature is that you can record the live stream to a SD card in the VidiU which is great for archiving or quick edits.

To configure the VidiU Pro all you need is an iPhone or Android device and the VidiU App. You can also view a video feed of what you are streaming. See how it’s done in the video below:

The VidiU Pro should be a great alternative for users who stream corporate, event and newspaper video. It’s great to see high end streaming technologies finally getting prosumer pricing.
