Vision and Intent: Exploring the Art of the DoP at Doc/Fest 2015

By associate editor Elliot Smith:

Definitely worth putting the kettle on and making some time for this panel discussion from the Sheffield Doc/Fest earlier this year.

Brian Woods, Vanessa Engel, Niel Harvey, Nicola Daley, Steven Robinson, Joanna Crickmay and Anthony Wonke talk about the move to digital, the production benefits of working with a DoP in documentary and how best to navigate the collaborative process and relationships with people in other key production positions.

Lots of gold in there – for example about the importance of listening even when you don’t understand the language, how part of the skillset of observational shooting is realising you won’t capture everything, and shooting with a 7D in the early days of the DSLR revolution.

And if you’re planning on attending Doc/Fest 2016 (if you’ve not been, it’s a fantastic gathering of like-minded documentary enthusiasts) you can still get a reduced rate ‘Lightning Pass’ from their website here.
