Teradek live show replay: Rode launch the Stereo VideoMic X

By site editor Dan Chung:

Rode microphones today took the wraps off their latest mic – the new Stereo VideoMic X. A high grade camera mountable mic that has a 180 degree pair of XY configured capsules. These allow recording of stereo tracks with a good degree of fidelity and separation.

There are selectable filters – a high pass filter that will reduce low end rumble and one that cleverly increases higher frequencies when using a foam windshield. These is also a -10/+20db cut & boost option that will allow the user to achieve a cleaner signal by, by decreasing the internal gain in the camera and boosting the mic output.

The construction is all metal and should stand hard use in the field. For news shooters the Stereo VideoMic X is basically a much higher quality of the existing Videomics that will be great for getting better audio on your b-roll.

The mic can be connected via stereo minjack or twin XLR cables. In fact you can even connect both at the same time – a neat trick. You can send audio to two cameras from the same mic simultaneously.

Rode are using similar technology in the Stereo VideoMic X as they do in their high end studio grade stereo mics. This is definitely a premium product and will have a premium price tag too – an interesting move from Rode.
