Defy goes large – the new $8500 G12 brushless gimbal

By site editor Dan Chung:

DEFY have today launched their new G12 brushless gimbal designed for heavier payloads up to 12lbs. The G12 is priced at $8500 US and is similar in design to the company’s G2 and G5 gimbals, but with twice the payload of the G5 model. The G12 can handle cameras like the RED Epic, Sony F55 or Canon C300 with heavier lenses and follow focus systems – up until now using a C300 or Epic on the smaller G5 has always mean’t stripping the camera right down. Importantly you can still use the G12 with lighter cameras like the 5D as well, making it a great option for shooters like myself who use different size cameras from day-to-day.

It is made of lightweight carbon fibre and aluminium and the adjustments are easily using adjustable thumb screws. The camera is mounted to the gimbal with a quick release plate, meaning it can be moved from gimbal to tripod or other mount quickly. Defy claim the G12 is scalable with quick adjustments allowing camera and lens changes during a shoot – something that up until now has proved tricky with some other gimbal designs.

For those familiar with gimbal designs Defy are keen to promote their double locking clamp on the roll bar. Stabilisation is in a full 3-axis and It has three modes of operation: Slow Pan, Fast Pan and Accessory Control.

Pan and tilt control is possible with the optional Throttle control. This comes in either single operator (wired) form or a dual user wireless option. The wired Throttle Pan/tilt controller costs $150 US but readers of Newsshooter can get one for free with their order by using the code defywithnewsshooter when placing their orders.
