OpenPocketCine– free field monitor for DJI Osmo Pocket 4/4P

DJI

OpenPocketCine is a completely free-to-use and open-source field monitor for DJI Osmo Pocket 4/4P. OpenPocketCine is Apache-2.0 licensed and built in the open by a community of filmmakers and developers.

If you don’t like the features or functionality of the DJI Mimo app when using your smartphone or tablet in conjunction with the DJI Osmo Pocket 4/4P, then this looks like a good alternative solution,

Its creator, Erik Sutton, states that he reverse-engineered the camera’s communication protocols.

The app features monitoring assist tools such as waveform, RGB parade, vectorscope, false color, zebras, focus peaking, and custom frame guides. You can also load up your own custom LUTs.

On a larger screen, like on an iPad, you can place and resize waveform, histogram, and vectorscope around the picture.

It also allows you to adjust ISO, shutter, white balance, focus, and recording formats. You can also make zoom adjustments and use an automated feature that switches color profiles automatically when zooming.

The app gives you the ability to do face tracking. It does this by using the phone’s native operating system libraries, such as Apple’s Vision frameworks or equivalent Android tools, to actively identify and track a face within the frame. Once the phone successfully detects the face, it generates a coordinate box around the subject. The app then transmits this tracking information directly to the DJI Osmo Pocket camera, effectively instructing it to lock onto the subject and maintain focus using the same command structure the camera uses for its standard tracking features.

A LEVEL feature reads the camera’s attitude to show roll and tilt on the picture. Users can pair it with the camera EV meter and waveform to check framing and exposure without looking away from the shot.

Zebras, peaking, false color, waveform, Traffic Lights, guides, and grid stay available when the phone is vertical.

OpenPocketCine also supports direct uploads to Frame.io and Blackmagic Cloud.

Availability

The app is available for free as an open-source project, with an iOS TestFlight beta currently available and an Android beta waitlist open
