Tunary Instruments THALM is an audio effect (AU · VST3) for Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve.

It is an Audio Unit and VST3 that allows users to place a track into a real acoustic space such as the next room, down the hall, out on the street, etc. The audio follows your playhead, so a source drifting down a corridor cuts perfectly with the picture.

The REC MOVE lets you press play, drag the music through the building as the scene plays, and bake that move into an editable route that renders along with the cut. Instead of setting filters, you set a place and the geometry drives the sound.

The way it works is that you draw a route over time and the sound travels with your NLE’s playhead.

There are two different ways you can use it:

  • STAY PUT
  • MOVE THROUGH

As their names would suggest, STAY PUT pins the music in one spot, and you move around it, while MOVE THROUGH sends you on a route through the building over time.

THALM allows you to rename rooms, set each room’s character, draw your own map, as well as load a real recorded space (an impulse response) into any room. These settings can all be saved to a cross-project bank you can reuse.

Users also have the ability to select how the music is playing in that space. You can choose from options such as live, wireless, a gramophone, a PA horn, a phone speaker, a concert rig, or a music box.

If you turn on REC MOVE, press play, and drag the music through the building while the scene runs, stop, it becomes a route that renders exactly with the cut, and every point of it stays editable. The alternative would be to tediously keyframe the controls by hand in the Inspector, one point at a time; instead, REC MOVE turns it into a single move, which saves a ton of time.

Pricing & Availability

Tunary Instruments THALM is currently available for $89 USD for the next few weeks. After that, it will go up to $129 USD.

If you want to try it out, the browser demo runs the same engine as the plugin. You place the music, walk it through the building, build your own map, and name its rooms.
