If you have been watching the news, you may have seen that there was a sizeable earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, which is in southern Japan. Kumamoto Prefecture is where a lot of Sony’s Semiconductor manufacturing takes place, and it is a key facility within Sony’s semiconductor business, producing CMOS image sensors for digital cameras, industrial applications, and automotive use.
At the Kumamoto Technology Centre (Kikuyo Town, Kumamoto Prefecture), where Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation is based, production activities were immediately suspended after the earthquake struck. Assessments of the damage to the buildings and facilities are currently underway. There have been no reports of injuries among the 13,000+ employees who were working at the site at the time of the earthquake.
