Sony FX5 Camera Test by Claudio Miranda, ASC

Academy Award–winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda, ASC, ACC (Life of Pi, Top Gun: Maverick, F1), put the new Sony FX5 to the test.

Claudio returned to a location he has frequented throughout his filmmaking career, using the FX5 on a test project to explore how its cinematic image quality and compact mobility perform in a real production environment.

Claudio evaluated the FX5 against the FX3, using the Sony VENICE 2 as his “gold standard” for color range, light values, and menu ergonomics. He went on to say that the FX5 has more VENICE-like traits than the FX3, especially when it came to soft roll-off and organic color reproduction.

He was also impressed by the camera’s low-light performance. What was of note is that while many cameras tend to produce an unpleasant red hue in shadows, the FX5 was able to transition smoothly and naturally into black.

Above, you can see Claudio’s camera test of the VENICE 2 that was done in the same location 4 years ago.
