A blast from the past– Lensworks Ikegami ITC-730A tube camera

If you have been around as long as I have, you will remember tube cameras like the Ikegami ITC-730A. Well, Lensworks has added a couple of customized versions to its rental fleet if you are after that old-school broadcast look.

Despite what you might think, there is actually some demand for products like this. As an example, a similar Ikagami tube camera was used, along with 35mm and 8mm film cameras, for the TV show Winning Time.

The Ikegami ITC-730A from the mid-80s allows for adjustable in-camera effects such as highlight trails, rainbow prismatic visuals, and color inversions that just can’t be recreated with modern sensors.

To adapt the 730A for modern cinema workflows, Lensworks’ engineering team built a custom cage which can be fitted with all the accessories cinematographers and ACs expect, such as a wireless transmission system, an on-board monitor, as well as focus motors and rangefinding sensors. Additionally, the Ikegami kits come with an on-board recorder to quickly and easily store and offload your footage. Two of these kits are now available at Lensworks.
