CINELUX REDUXA R Focal Reducer for RED DSMC2

CINELUX has unveiled its new REDUXA R Focal Reducer for RED DSMC2 cameras. The REDUXA R is still in the development/prototype stage, and CINELUX expects to revise it before the final version eventually ships in February next year.

The REDUXA R2 is a 0.71x focal reducer for RED DSMC2, giving full frame lenses a wider field of view and roughly one extra stop of light. It includes precise optical calibration and will be available in EF and PL mounts.

The EF model features full electronic communication with the camera. The EF version is fully electronic, with full communication between the lens and the camera. You get in-camera aperture control, focus, and lens data where supported, and full metadata is recorded into your R3D files.

The PL version is fully mechanical and offered at a lower cost, as electronic control isn’t required for most PL lenses.

The REDUXA R2 uses a 0.71x optic that balances coverage and light gain. The design is based on a proven 5-element, 4-group layout found in other high-end reducers. The goal is not just sharpness, but an image that feels natural, with flares that behave nicely.

The REDUXA R2 gives you an extra stop of light. On light-hungry sensors like Dragon, this should result in cleaner shadows and better low-light performance. And on more modern sensors like Gemini, it effectively doubles your usable ISO, so ISO 1600 behaves more like 3200.

What cameras will it work with?

REDUXA R2 works with almost all RED DSMC2 camera bodies, excluding RAVEN. RAVEN isn’t supported because its EF mount is fixed (non-interchangeable).

A small number of early DSMC2 DRAGON (Magnesium / Carbon Fibre) bodies and some very early SCARLET-W units can have a slightly different internal layout that may affect fitment. This mainly applies to early DSMC2 units shipped roughly from 2015 through early 2016. CINELUX is currently verifying these bodies and exploring a way to accommodate them where possible, but they can’t guarantee fitment on these specific early models yet.

If you’re not sure about compatibility, please send CINELUX a photo of the sensor area with the lens mount removed. They can then identify the exact variant and advise whether it’s compatible.
