Project Hail Mary– 1.43 Scene Breakdown

IMAX has a new video where co-directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller break down a pivotal scene in Project Hail Mary. They discuss the technical challenges and creative choices involved in filming specifically for IMAX.

The directors also explain that the scene serves as a metaphor for a character moving from a limited perception of the world to seeing the vibrant, unseen mysteries of science that exist all around us.

To create the vast space around the ship and the planet Adrian, the team utilized ILM and built a large physical set of the spaceship. Actor Ryan Gosling was hung on wires to simulate zero gravity.

Cinematographer Greig Fraser ACS ASC used ARRI ALEXA 65 cameras on cranes with infrared filters removed to achieve a unique visual effect. They also built a special cage with blinking infrared lights that were invisible to the naked eye but created a beautiful pink bokeh effect on camera.

To create a smeary, wet feeling for the scene, Fraser used a handheld camera setup involving water poured between panes of glass.

The alien character Rocky was brought to life using three different methodologies, including a remote animatronic puppeteered live on set to ensure natural dialogue and movement interaction.
