Behind the Visual Effects of Sinners

Warner Bros. has a good breakdown video that shows how visual effects (VFX) were used to bring director Ryan Krueger’s vision for the film Sinners to life, particularly in creating the illusion of Michael B. Jordan playing twin brothers.

The key VFX highlights include:

  • Multipass Twinning– This technique was pushed to its limits for scenes where the twins interact.
  • Halo Camera Rig– A custom 10-camera array was developed to capture Michael B. Jordan’s performance from any angle.
  • IMAX 65mm Film Production– The VFX team created a custom lens profiling and film emulation pipeline to preserve the film’s quality when shot on IMAX.
  • Traditional VFX– The film incorporates over a thousand VFX shots, including fire tornadoes, vampires, and subtle environmental details like cotton fields and animals with metaphorical meanings.
  • Monumental Juke Joint Shot– This 3.5-minute continuous shot was stitched from five takes, and is likely the longest continuous shot ever on IMAX film.

Sinners received the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture Award at the 32nd Annual Actor Awards Presented by SAG-AFTRA.
